1/27/2024 0 Comments Science manuscript cover letterThe cover letter may also be a “misleading commercial advertisement” where it would not represent the content of the manuscript ( 3).Īlthough many editors may not read or seriously consider the cover letters of the submitted manuscripts ( 3, 4), neglecting the importance of the cover letter may be a risk for the authors. Contrary to this view, some believe that the cover letter’s content overlaps with the manuscript’s abstract and gives mostly redundant information already found within the online submission system ( 3). Missing this opportunity may have unintentional consequences, rejection without further consideration instead of being sent for external peer-review ( 5, 6). One of the most common complaints voiced by editors regarding submitted manuscripts is that the authors neglect to write a well-written cover letter, including a statement justifying the importance of their work ( 6). Amongst the different steps of the publication process, the cover letter is the last step and is often overlooked ( 5). In fact, some high-quality and prestigious journals pay specific attention to the cover letter ( 3). Providing a cover letter alongside the submission process is now required by most scientific journals. In scientific writing and publishing, a cover/covering letter is a letter to the editor’s target journal ( 4). The cover letter is commonly known as a motivation letter submitted along with the curriculum vitae (CV) or a job application for employment ( 1) or academic position ( 2), and it is not clear why and how it was introduced into the scientific field ( 3). The Cambridge dictionary defines a cover letter as “a letter that contains information about the thing it is sent with”. Here, we provide a practical guide to draft a well-written, concise, and professional cover letter for a scientific medical paper. Spending enough time to draft an informative, comprehensive, and concise cover letter is quite worthwhile a poorly drafted one would not persuade the editor that the submitted work is fit for publication and may lead to immediate rejection. The letter also includes the contact information of the corresponding author (s) and may also include suggestions of potential reviewers. A typical cover letter includes the name of the editor and the journal, date of submission, the characteristics of the manuscript, the importance of the work and its relevance to prospective audiences, declarations such as author agreements, conflicts of interest statement, funding source (s), and ethical statements. A cover (covering) letter is a brief business letter introducing the scientific work alongside the submission process of a manuscript and is required by most scientific peer-review journals. 1/27/2024 0 Comments Gridlock traffictraffic congestion is recurring, and is attributed to sheer weight of traffic most of the rest is attributed to traffic incidents, road work and weather events. Several specific circumstances can cause or aggravate congestion most of them reduce the capacity of a road at a given point or over a certain length, or increase the number of vehicles required for a given volume of people or goods. Traffic congestion occurs when a volume of traffic generates demand for space greater than the available street capacity this point is commonly termed saturation. Mathematically, traffic is modeled as a flow through a fixed point on the route, analogously to fluid dynamics.Ĭauses Speed-flow diagram for a highway, scales omitted. This is ineffective: increasing road capacity induces more demand for driving. Drivers and driver-focused road planning departments commonly propose to alleviate congestion by adding another lane to the road. ĭrivers can become frustrated and engage in road rage. When vehicles are fully stopped for periods of time, this is known as a traffic jam or (informally) a traffic snarl-up or a tailback. While congestion is a possibility for any mode of transportation, this article will focus on automobile congestion on public roads.Īs demand approaches the capacity of a road (or of the intersections along the road), extreme traffic congestion sets in. When traffic demand is great enough that the interaction between vehicles slows the traffic stream, this results in congestion. Traffic congestion on urban road networks has increased substantially since the 1950s. "We'll utilize and expand our current bus driver contractors to make up for those vacancies," spokeswoman Crystina Lugo-Beach said in a statement.Įlsewhere in the metro, four suburban districts contacted this week said they did not anticipate the bus route delays, concerns or cancellations that would warrant special messaging to families ahead of the start of the new year. Paul, and it finalized a three-year agreement with Teamsters Local 320 in January 2022 to "notably improve" wages. Paul schools spokeswoman Erica Wacker said via text message about the federal funding strategy, which is to provide a final $200,000 in assistance in 2023-24.įirst Student says it also is benefiting from state legislation this year that allows hourly school workers - from bus drivers to classroom aides - to collect unemployment insurance between academic terms. Paul now will have 240 fully-staffed routes, up from 175 in 2021-22. With the return of service to the three schools that had lost it, St. The funding was to be used for driver recruitment and retention efforts, and First Student - one such vendor - ended up offering $30 an hour in starting wages and $3,000 signing bonuses, Jenifer Doyle, First Student area safety manager, said Wednesday. After honoring half of the amount it contracted to pay in a 2020-21 school year that found students learning virtually much of the time, the district steered $581,778 in federal COVID relief money to contractors in 2021-22, and another $690,000 in 2022-23. Paul's partnership with its private bus and van contractors is paying off - literally. In Louisville, Ky., a bus rerouting plan driven by a driver shortage resulted in longer routes, and the temporary shutdown of schools, the New York Times reported in August. Still, not every maneuver works, and in some other parts of the United States, the driver shortage is acute. Routes are shuffled and new service created. Coaches and teachers are obtaining licenses to drive. "I wouldn't say it's worse," Garrett Regan, an executive board member for the Minnesota School Bus Operators Association, said Wednesday of pressure to fill slots across the state. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, which was also made into a 1982 film The Secret of NIMH, notes the National Institutes of Health. The work also inspired the 1971 children’s book Mrs. A host of science fiction works - books like Soylent Green, comics like 2000AD - played on Calhoun’s ideas and those of his contemporaries. The work tapped into the era’s feeling of dread that crowded urban areas heralded the risk of moral decay - and events like the murder of Kitty Genovese (though it was misreported) only served to intensify the worry. The unusual behaviors he observed he dubbed "behavioral sinks."Īfter Calhoun wrote about his findings in a 1962 issue of Scientific American, that term caught on in popular culture, according to a paper published in the Journal of Social History. When the population started declining the beautiful ones were spared from violence and death, but had completely lost touch with social behaviors, including having sex or caring for their young.Ĭalhoun’s experiments, which started with rats an outdoor pen and moved on to mice at the National Institute of Mental Health during the early 1960s, were interpreted at the time as evidence of what could happen in an overpopulated world. The few secluded spaces housed a population Calhoun called, "the beautiful ones." Generally guarded by one male, the females-and few males-inside the space didn't breed or fight or do anything but eat and groom and sleep. Sometimes they'd drop and abandon a baby while they were carrying it. They'd move half their litter away from danger and forget the rest. Few females carried pregnancies to term, and the ones that did seemed to simply forget about their babies. They gathered in the main squares, waiting to be fed and occasionally attacking each other. But what looked like rat utopias and mouse paradises at first quickly spiraled into out-of-control overcrowding, eventual population collapse and seemingly sinister behavior patterns.įor io9, Esther Inglis-Arkell writes about Calhoun’s twenty-fifth habitat and the experiment that followed:Īt the peak population, most mice spent every living second in the company of hundreds of other mice. These were all part of John Calhoun’s experiments to study the effects of population density on behavior. What does utopia look like for mice? According to a researcher who did most of his work in the 1950s through1970s, it might include limitless food (of course!), multiple levels and secluded little rodent condos. 1/26/2024 0 Comments Dap window putty 33For me, the exterior of the windows were hard to reach after they were installed, which of course is when you first notice how messy the left-over streaks of putty are. The reason is that it takes a lot of work to clean the window later. It might be good to tape some paper or newspaper to the glass. When you subsequently stroke in the opposite direction, that will set the putty down into the window frame. The first stroke to apply the putty gets it into position, but depending on the consistency of the putty, may lift the putty off the muntin. The main thing that I learned technique-wise was to stroke the putty with the knife in two directions. It turned out that the smooth application by the window shop guy was a skill learned by doing many windows. You'll have to decide whether to use the stuff that comes in a container or the stuff from the caulking tube. It turned out to be a very difficult job for me. I went on to putty about a dozen windows, almost 100 individual panes. Regardless of his position, he was able to do the most beautiful work. He was obviously not the best paid employee and was given the task of puttying the windows. The putty external to the glass may crack, but the bead is less likely to crack with aging.Īlso, many years ago I visited a window shop when ordering windows and watched a guy applying putty. This time around, I made sure to both prime and paint the muntin before glazing, with the intermediate putty. The net result was some water damage to the frame. I made the mistake many years ago of not putting a bead of putty between the glass and the wood. It's important when glazing to prevent water from getting in and damaging the wood. 1/26/2024 0 Comments Hunting safariUnless they are sick or injured, cheetahs generally prefer to prey upon wild species and avoid hunting domestic livestock, according to the Cheetah Conservation Fund.A proud 40-year history of ethical, reasonably priced trophy hunting of the highest standard in Namibia has revealed that sustainable utilization of wildlife resources has been a major factor in protecting Namibia's game populations. However, their biggest threat is human conflict as they are often shot by farmers who consider them a threat to their livestock. Found in isolated pockets of Eastern and Southern Africa as well as a very small population in Asia, cheetahs are not considered a danger to humans. "These climate changes could become really critical if we look into the future - it's predicted to become much warmer in this part of Africa where cheetahs live, in Botswana, Namibia and Zambia," said Wachter of the Cheetah Research Project.Ĭheetahs are considered to be Africa's most endangered big cat with only about 7,000 remaining in the wild, CBS Miami reported. In addition to competition with lions and leopards, cheetahs already face severe pressure from habitat fragmentation and conflict with humans. In the next phase of research, the scientists plan to use audio-recording devices and accelerometers - "like a Fitbit for big cats," said Rafiq - to document the frequency of encounters between large carnivores. While seasonal cycles explain most temperature fluctuations in the study window of 2011 to 2018, the scientists say the observed behavior changes offer a peek into the future of a warming world. They compared this data with maximum daily temperature records. "There's a greater chance for more unfriendly encounters and less food for the cheetahs," said co-author Kasim Rafiq, a biologist at the University of Washington and the nonprofit Botswana Predator Conservation Trust.įor the current study, researchers placed GPS tracking collars on 53 large carnivores - including cheetahs, lions, leopards and African wild dogs - and recorded their locations and hours of activity over eight years. Hunting at different times of the day is one long-evolved strategy to reduce encounters between the multiple predator species that share northern Botswana's mixed savannah and forest landscape.īut the new study found that on the hottest days, when maximum daily temperatures soared to nearly 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit), cheetahs became more nocturnal - increasing their overlapping hunting hours with rival big cats by 16%. Male siblings end up forming groups known as a coalition, which increases hunting success and acts as a defense against other predators, the group says. According to the Cheetah Conservation Fund, cubs start hunting with their mother at about one year of age and then separate from their mothers about six months later after they have mastered their skills. The employee discount is all over the place and is decided by the type of item you're buying. The employee discount doesn't stack with anything and if you use in store credit, you can't use the discount either. They bonuses they offer aren't even actual bonuses, it's either in store credit or coupons to use in the store by the end of the following month. So you have to spend all year earning enough to take maybe a week off (assuming nothing comes up and you need to use it.) Every 6 hours you earn a single 20 minute unpaid break. It completely unfair, PTO is slow to earn, one 8 hour shift earns you 9 minutes of PTO that you can take. Raises are every 6 months and it took me almost 2 years to start making what others were hired on at. The handbook contradicts itself by giving rule sets then saying, "but the store manager has final say." So why include it then? After being employed for as long as I have here, there's been others hired on after myself with less experience in the field making more than me in the same position I hold which is a huge blow to motivation. After getting past that phase and receiving a promotion I started to see how much, or how little, corporate interacts with the stores. At first when I was hired there was a decent amount to learn about how the stores operate and function. The job itself isn't hard or bad, what makes the job less than desirable is the pay, lack of direction from corporate, and lack of encouragement/incentive to perform well. |
